BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Black (Afro-American) History Month is a yearly celebration of achievements by African Americans and a way to recognize the Role of African Americans in U. S. History. Black History Month began in 1915 by Carter G. Woodson and Jesse E. Moreland who founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. ASNLH is dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by African Americans and other peoples of African descent.
In 1926, ASNLH sponsored a national WEEK, the second week of February to recognize Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas. Schools and communities nationwide began to celebrate and create clubs, performances, and lectures.
Since 1976, every President has declared February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.
The Black (Afro-American) History Month 2020 theme, “African Americans and the Vote,” is in Honor of the centennial anniversary of women’s Suffrage and 150 year anniversary of the Fifteenth Amendment giving Black men the right to vote.
There are many celebrations in the Dallas Area for Black History Month where women and men chose to dress up to mark the occasion. From dressing as specific influential Black Historical characters who shaped history to dressing in colorful or ethnic attire, going back to African roots. Black History Month is commemorated in many unique ways that may be as simple as wearing African print attire to showing off in extreme fabulous or couture fashions. Some may even choose to wear Nefertiti style head dresses, jewelry or togas to any number of African Heritage dresses. We have an unlimited supply of lovely African 3 pc. sets, dresses,’ moomoo’s,’ kaftans, long or short dashikis, along with amazing exotic, African or animal print dusters, skirts, tops blouses, hair ties, scarves & fabulous jewelry. Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was a seamstress at the Montgomery Fair department store. We have plenty of 1950’s style day dresses to pair with a long coat or cardigan and a hat as was common during that time. If you are looking to replicate the outfit even more, we carry pearl earrings, shoes, and even clear glasses and a wig!
HISTORICAL ROSA PARKS BLACK FIGURE COSTUME
Rosa Parks was a civil rights activist and a member of NAACP. She was best known for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a public transportation bus. This courageous act sparked a boycott of the Montgomery Bus System, marking her as one of the Civil Rights Movement’s most influential and iconic figures.
Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin, The Queen of Soul, had so much style when it came to fashion. Whether she was poised in a form fitting, floor length dress or one of her many bell sleeved kaftans, she never looked anything less than perfect. Aretha is most remembered for her beaded gowns with a long knee slit and gorgeous feathers everywhere. Find all things Aretha, wigs, earrings, feathers, gowns and shoes at Dallas Vintage Shop.
FAMOUS BLACK HISTORICAL ARTIST ARETHA FRANKLIN
Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul! However, did you know she was more than a legendary music icon? She was a huge part of the Civil Rights Movement and used her fame and her voice to advocate for racial equality. She used her concerts and tours as fundraisers for Martin Luther King Jr’s campaign holding free concerts to get the attention needed to make change.
Duke Ellington
Duke Ellington is most often portrayed in a top hat and coat showing off his dapper style. However, you could also wear a leopard print smoking robe and be recognizable. A double breasted tux jacket with satin trim and ruffled shirt with matching tie can be used to create a somewhat more costume black tie look. If the top hat isn’t for you, try a hounds-tooth blazer along with a subtle fedora of any color can be found at Dallas Vintage Shop.
BLACK HISTORY JAZZ ICON DUKE ELLINGTON
Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington was best known for his amazing Jazz notes and black pride, but he also found a way to deal with prejudice in very subtle ways. He refused to play concerts for a segregated audience, and held benefit concerts for those who were treated unfairly in the justice system. He referred to Jazz as “African-American classical music,” and became an integral figure of the Harlem Renaissance.
Robert Leroy Johnson
Robert Leroy Johnson is the master of Blues. It took decades after his death to be posthumously added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame but his music set the way to influence countless others.
